Packages manager


The packages manager is a must-to-have tool for all Linux operating systems. Whit it you can search, install, remove, update software packages in your Linux system. In the Linux world applications and tools aren't object scattered in the web immensity, but are packages well kept in places called Repositories, where you can get the latest version, customized to the specific Linux operating system.
The packages manager in liveVoyager is called APT, that is in two version, one textual handled by the Terminal, and graphic handled with mouse and keyboard called Synaptic. All two are able to manage dependencies.

To run Synaptic, follow this path:

Main Menu → System → Package manager

Let we briefly show the different areas in the Synaptic window, following numbers.

  1. Menu Bar - In it there are important functions to reload repositories, to add external supports for packages, and so on
  2. Functions Bar - Where are buttons for reloading, updates marking, edit application, infos about properties of selected software, and package searching.
  3. Sections Area - In it there is a long applications list, subdivided into categories. Clicking on a specific section, you'll keep a long packages list, for this specific section, in the area with number 4
  4. Applications Area - In this area there's a long applications list collected for the selected section in the area with number 3. Please note that near the package name there is a symbol that notify its status in the system. For a correct understanding of these symbols, see the picture at right.
  5. Identification Area - In this area there are lot of buttons that you can use for searching for packages with different criteria. The list of all available options is too long.
  6. Info Area - This area show information about package selected in the area number 4. Normally will shown application functions, dependencies, and other interesting infos.

Let we show how to install a package like Quod Libet, a music player for Xfce desktop.

  1. Search for the package. Click on "Search" button in the Functions Area
  2. In the Applications Area find the package
  3. Right click on the white square, and in the menu click on "Mark for installation".
  4. A new window indicate which others packages and libraries will be installed to allows the package work correctly. In this window will be also shown which packages will be updated, and/or removed. Read carefully what is notified. Once done click on "Mark".
  5. In the Functions Bar click on "Apply" button to start the packages download, and installation procedures
  6. A new window ask your confirmation about the imminent operation. Click on "Apply"
  7. Packages downloading may take lot of time, and a loading bar indicate the procedure progress.
  8. Once download is finished, packages will be installed.
  9. At the end, a new window notify that the package was installed. Just go into the Main Menu to find it in its relative category.
