Software source

* The software for liveVoyager can be installed from the so-called "Repositories" that are distinguished by different software in it, as shown in the software source management tool:
  • Main - Software directly supported by Canonical
  • Universe - Software maintained by Ubuntu community
  • Restricted - Where there are proprietary drivers
  • Multiverse - Software with restriction
To manage repositories, you can run a graphical tool, going to:

Main Menu → System → Package Manager

In it click on "Settings" menu, then on "Repositories" item.
It's necessary the root password to access this tool.
In it there are five tabs:
  • Software for Ubuntu

    In this tab you can indicate which repositories are enabled for software installation. By default are enabled the first three, for legal issues. To enable also the fourth, just check it.
    In this tab you can also set-up from which server must be downloaded the software. Just click on "Download from:" bar, choosing in the drop-down menu.
    If you click on "Other" item, there will be open a new window where there are other options, subdivided by countries.

    You can also install sofwtare from the installation DVD.
  • Other software

    *

    In this tab you can add repositories that aren't in the list. These repositories are the so called PPA. To insert a new one, just click on "Add" button, insert the new repository URI, then follow the instructions on the screen.

  • Updates

    *

    In this tab you can set-up software update methods. It's very important to pay attention to this tab.
    First of all you can define the level for th software to update. You can update the security and recommended software (default options), but you can also make the proposed updates, with stability level isn't properly tested. You can also make the unsupported software updates. In this case make it at your own risk.
    You can also set-up scheduled automated updates (every two weeks is the default value), if notify updates presence only (default option), and other.
    Finally you can perform a distro version upgrade, choosing which of available versions.
  • Authentication

    *

    Inserting new repositories can require authentication keys, that allows user to access to the related repository. This is a security method. To add a new authentication key, it's necessary to download it, then click on "Add" button, and insert it.
  • Statistics

    *

    Trough this tab you can participate to a statistic research that indicate, to Ubuntu developers, which are the popular software. By default is a disabled function. To enable it, check it.
